Hotel San Diego

Hotel San Diego is a 3-star property right in the historic centre of Mexico City, on Luis Moya street, in the Colonia Centro of the Cuauhtémoc borough. Location is its calling card: it's three blocks from the Teatro Metropólitan and the Palacio de Bellas Artes, and just a short walk from the craft stalls of the La Ciudadela market.

It makes a comfortable, well-connected base for anyone travelling for leisure or business. The rooms are spacious and modern, with carpeted floors, a private bathroom, a flat-screen TV with satellite channels, a desk and a safe; there are room types for couples as well as family rooms that sleep up to four. The hotel also has its own restaurant serving Mexican cuisine, plus a bar.

The property runs around the clock, with a 24-hour front desk, room service, a lift, a gym, a business centre and free Wi-Fi throughout the building. It also offers free private parking — a rarity in this part of town — and payment can be made by card or in cash.

A 3-star hotel in the historic centre of Mexico City, steps from Bellas Artes and a short walk from the Zócalo.

The hotel's rooms

Hotel San Diego offers three room types built for different needs: a Standard Room with an extra-large bed, ideal for couples or travellers after a bit of space; a Double Room with two double beds, well suited to families or groups of up to four; and a Standard Room with one large bed, a practical pick for two guests. All are roomy — around 26 m² — and modern in style.

All three share the same essentials: carpeted floors, a private marble bathroom with a bath or shower, free toiletries, towels and toilet paper, a flat-screen TV with satellite and cable channels, a telephone, a desk, a wardrobe, a safe and bed linen provided. The differences come down mainly to the bed setup and capacity — from the extra-large double bed of the Standard, to the two double beds of the Double Room, which sleeps up to four. In every case these are well-kept, functional spaces geared towards resting after a day out in the city centre.

Is this the hotel for you?

Yes, if...

  • You've come to explore the historic centre: the Palacio de Bellas Artes is three blocks away and the Zócalo a short walk.
  • You want to get around by metro: Balderas and Salto del Agua stations are both under a ten-minute walk.
  • You're arriving by car: the hotel offers free private parking, a rarity in this area.
  • You like to dine without heading out: the hotel has its own Mexican restaurant and a bar on site.
  • You're travelling as a family: the Double Room, with two double beds, sleeps up to four.

Maybe not, if...

  • You're after a quiet, residential feel: this is a very central, lively and busy part of the city.
  • You're travelling with a pet: animals are not allowed at the property.
  • You need to check in very early: arrivals are from 15:00 onwards.
  • You'd like a hotel with a pool or spa: the San Diego has a gym, but not those facilities.

Hotel amenities and facilities

Hotel San Diego brings together the essentials for a comfortable, hassle-free stay in the heart of the capital. The front desk is staffed around the clock, with room service, luggage storage, a tourist-information desk and express check-in and check-out, while the whole building has a lift and free Wi-Fi available in every corner of the property.

One of its biggest draws is having its own Mexican restaurant and bar, along with the option of breakfast served in the room. On top of that there's free private parking within the hotel, with no need to book — an extra that's hard to come by in this part of the city. The property also has a gym, a business centre with computers, a safe, a laundry service and dry cleaning. The rooms come with a private marble bathroom, free toiletries, towels, bed linen, a wardrobe, a desk, a carpeted floor and a flat-screen TV with satellite and cable channels. With this set of comforts, the hotel is geared towards travellers looking for a complete, well-placed base from which to discover Mexico City.

Location & what to see

Hotel San Diego sits on Luis Moya street, in the Colonia Centro of the Cuauhtémoc borough, right in the historic centre of Mexico City. It's a central, lively and busy area, very well connected: the Balderas (lines 1 and 3) and Salto del Agua (lines 1 and 8) metro stations are about 350 and 450 metres away, so you can cross the city without relying on a car.

The monumental heart of the capital is an easy stroll on foot. The Palacio de Bellas Artes and the Teatro Metropólitan are three blocks away; the Alameda Central, the Torre Latinoamericana with its observation deck and the Museo de Arte Popular are all within a kilometre, and the Zócalo — with the Metropolitan Cathedral and the National Palace — sits just over a kilometre away. A couple of blocks from the door is the La Ciudadela craft market, the largest in the city, open Monday to Saturday from 10:00 to 19:00 and Sundays until 18:00.

The best time to visit the city is spring and autumn, with mild weather and clear skies; summer brings afternoon rain. It's wise to move around by day along the main streets and, after dark, to stick to the busier routes — sound advice for the whole of the centre. One bonus of this property: Mexico City International Airport is around 9 kilometres away, barely 11 minutes by car.
